The Single Most Important Fact to Know About Your Coffee: Freshness
Store your coffee beans in an air-tight, opaque container in the cupboard or other dry place. Use only airtight containers. The habits of coffee connoisseurs ensure that ground coffee is kept from oxygen, which causes the coffee product to deteriorate and become stale. Light-proof, air-tight containers provide an environment which resists the three main factors that cause coffee staleness: light, air, and moisture.
Coffee beans tend to lose their flavor rather quickly and even faster after being ground. this is especially true if steps are not taken to preserve that flavor. The first step that you can take to preserve your coffee's flavor is to keep it whole bean until needed. If you do not already have one, purchase a grinder for your coffee.
Another consideration is the length of time that the coffee needs to be stored. If you will use the ground coffee you have within two days, then keeping it in a sealed container. If you need to keep your coffee beans longer than two weeks, then keep them in a sealed container and take out only the amount you are going to use and put the remainder back into the container immediately. Coffee kept this way will last a month or maybe slightly longer.
Maybe you have stored coffee in the freezer or the refrigerator to keep it cold. The problem with that is when you take the bag of coffee in and out to brew, condensation forms on the inside of the container. This condensation will cause the coffee to go stale more quickly than if you just left it out. All your effort will be wasted.
If you are not going to be using ground coffee beans for a couple of days, such as if you are planning ahead for a special occasion or holiday, you might put it in the freezer, not the fridge, because other smells can get into the beans. No matter what you do, coffee is always at it's peak of flavor when it is freshly roasted, ground and then used within minutes. Freshness makes all the difference.
When you take unground coffee beans out of the freezer, change containers to save the precious coffee beans from moisture that will inevitably form on the inside of the bag.
